India Records Highest-Ever Renewable Energy Capacity Addition In 2025, Crosses 50% Non-Fossil Power Milestone

The country crossed 250 GW of non-fossil installed capacity in August 2025, with total non-fossil capacity rising to 262.74 GW by November 2025, accounting for 51.5% of India’s total installed power capacity of 509.64 GW. Renewable energy capacity addition during 2025 (till November) stood at a record 44.51 GW, nearly double the 24.72 GW added during the same period last year. Total renewable energy installed capacity increased by over 23% year-on-year to 253.96 GW in November 2025.
Solar power led this expansion, with capacity additions of 34.98 GW during the year, compared to 20.85 GW in the corresponding period last year. India crossed the 100 GW solar milestone in January 2025, with installed solar capacity reaching 132.85 GW by November—over 41% higher than a year earlier. Wind energy also posted strong growth, with additions of 5.82 GW compared to 3.2 GW last year, taking total installed wind capacity to 53.99 GW in November 2025, a rise of over 12.5% year-on-year.
On 29 July 2025, India recorded its highest-ever renewable share in electricity generation, with renewables meeting 51.5% of the country’s total power demand of 203 GW in a single day. Globally, India continues to strengthen its position, ranking third in solar power capacity, fourth in wind power capacity and fourth in overall renewable energy capacity, according to IRENA Renewable Energy Statistics 2025.
