India Crosses 500 GW Power Capacity, Achieves 51% from Clean Energy Sources; Five Years Ahead of 2030 Target

Solar-Plant-Power-Capacity
India’s power sector has achieved two historic milestones, marking a major step toward a clean, secure, and self-reliant energy future. As of 30 September 2025, the nation’s total installed electricity capacity has crossed the 500 GW mark, reaching 500.89 GW. This achievement reflects years of strong policy support, investment, and coordinated efforts across the energy ecosystem.

Of this total, non-fossil fuel sources, including renewable energy, hydro, and nuclear, account for 256.09 GW (over 51%), while fossil-fuel-based sources contribute 244.80 GW (around 49%). Within renewables, solar power leads with 127.33 GW, followed by wind power at 53.12 GW.

During FY 2025–26 (April–September 2025), India added 28 GW of non-fossil capacity and 5.1 GW of fossil-fuel capacity, demonstrating the nation’s accelerating transition toward clean energy.

A Record Day for Renewables

On 29 July 2025, India achieved its highest-ever renewable share in electricity generation, with 51.5% of total demand (203 GW) met by green sources, including 44.50 GW from solar, 29.89 GW from wind, and 30.29 GW from hydro.

This marks the first time renewable energy supplied over half of India’s total electricity demand in a single day, highlighting the country’s steady progress toward energy transformation.

Meeting National Targets Early

With these milestones, India has already met one of its key COP26 ‘Panchamrit’ goals, having 50% of installed power capacity from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030, five years ahead of schedule.

The achievement underscores India’s global leadership in clean energy, attained while maintaining grid stability, reliability, and energy security.

A Collective Effort

The Ministry of Power and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) congratulated all power generators, transmission utilities, system operators, and state agencies for their role in this accomplishment.

India’s renewable energy growth is also generating significant employment in manufacturing, installation, maintenance, and innovation, benefitting both rural and urban communities.
