HP floats EoI for ₹212-cr escalators in Shimla

For the benefit of the stream of tourists visiting Shimla, the HP government has decided to install escalators and lifts at 22 locations in the state capital involving an investment of ₹212.55 crore. Under the smart city project, there is provision for covered escalators and lifts at these locations for ease of vertical mobility of locals and visitors. While ₹143.25 crore would be spent under PPP, ₹69.30 crore would be invested through self finance module. Municipal Corporation (MC) Shimla has identified pathways where escalators will be installed. These pathways are used by 5000-6000 persons on an average daily and by porters to carry items weighing 15kg to 20kg. Shimla municipal commissioner, Pankaj Rai said that a large number of manufacturers showed keen interest and the corporation is examining the response of firms that are supplying and installing escalators. He also said that a committee of three engineers has been formed to check the feasibility of identified spots. According to the expression of interest, the contract period will be 10 years of which 2 years will be initial installation, including commissioning of escalators and 8 years is the estimated life cycle of each escalator.
