Highway Construction Slows in India Due to Election Delays

Highway construction in India
Highway construction in India has slowed significantly in the past two months due to delays in land acquisition approvals amid national elections. Data from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways shows that 483 km of national highways were constructed in April, with an additional 600 km built by May 20. This represents the slowest pace of road construction in the first two months of FY25 since the pandemic, according to data reviewed by Moneycontrol. The slowdown is attributed to reduced land clearance following the implementation of the Model Code of Conduct and the commencement of voting on April 19.
