Gujarat Government Bolsters Energy Security with Strategic Partnership

Growth and self-reliance in the power sector
In alignment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for inclusive growth and self-reliance in the power sector, the Government of Gujarat has launched an initiative to enhance the state's energy security. Signed on June 25, 2024, in the presence of the Minister of Finance, Energy & Petrochemical, Gujarat aims to ensure energy security by integrating Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL) and Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation (GMDC). This collaboration focuses on replacing aging generating units and expanding capacities through coal and lignite-based power stations, emphasizing sustainable energy practices for a vibrant Gujarat.

Over the past five years, Gujarat has seen a significant rise in power demand, growing at a CAGR of over 6%. Anticipating a peak demand of ~36,000 MW by FY 2031-32 (as per the 20th EPS Report, CEA), the Energy & Petrochemical Department (EPD) and Industries & Mines Department (IMD) under Chief Minister Bhupendrabhai Patel have outlined a strategic framework.

Shri Kanubhai Desai, Hon’ble Minister of Finance, Energy & Petrochemical, GoG said, “The signing of this MOU marks a historic milestone as we embark on a journey to secure the energy future of Vibrant Gujarat. This landmark agreement between GUVNL and GMDC is a testament to our shared dedication to energy excellence. Through the collective wisdom and strategic partnership, we are committed to providing reliable and sustainable power for all, ensuring that our State continues to thrive and grow. A self-reliant and Vibrant Gujarat will also be a force multiplier for the country’s economy. Energy security is at the core of our efforts, ensuring positive results and significant investments through the mining and electricity value chain."
