The PWD wing of the state government in Assam has decided to build a mega Assam Mala road project at an of ₹5,000 crore. Assam Mala will comprise state highways, major district roads and roads of economic importance are being upgraded as per NH specifications. In a review meeting, engineers and officials claimed that the project will be entirely funded by state resources. Under the project, the state government aims to build new road lengths and will also upgrade all the existing state highways. Around 2,500 km of the highways would be undertaken in the initial stages and the remaining work in the project will be completed in a phased manner.
