The tourism ministry has decided to invest ₹5,000 crore over a period of time for development of 17 iconic sites across the country, in collaboration with central ministries of road transport and highways, shipping, civil aviation and railways, and has asked the FM to allocate funds for the purpose. Sites include the Taj Mahal and Fatehpur Sikri in Uttar Pradesh; Ajanta and Ellora in Maharashtra; Red Fort, Humayun’s Tomb and Qutab Minar in Delhi; Hampi in Karnataka; Somnath and Dholavira in Gujarat, Amer Fort in Rajasthan, and Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh. The allocation for the development of these sites needs to be separate from the existing Swadesh Darshan scheme. The PMO has asked the tourism ministry to consult NITI Aayog as the bulk of the fund will be invested in the first three or four years and NITI Aayog is directly involved and it can then push the other ministries and departments on this score.
