In the biggest ever push, the Central government has prepared a blueprint to award national highway projects entailing a staggering investment of Rs.5 lakh crore, said Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, claiming that the highway contracts commanding a length of about 50,000 km, have already been awarded in the past two years and the ministry has surpassed the cumulative road length awarded in the last five years. He further added that the contracts will be for 44 economic corridors and 10 expressways, and would include the 'chardham' connectivity program, northeast connectivity program and the international borders-linking projects. In fact, the ministry has planned several projects that would be very crucial for overall development of the country, besides these new highways projects will decongest the existing roads bringing down logistics cost by five to six per cent.
