Govt Plans Sagarmala 2.0 with New Funding to Bridge Infra Gaps: Sonowal
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways (MoPSW) is executing 839 projects worth ₹5.79 lakh crore under the Sagarmala Programme, with 272 projects completed at an investment of ₹1.41 lakh crore.

Ongoing developments include 234 port modernisation projects worth ₹2.91 lakh crore, adding 230 MTPA capacity, and 279 connectivity projects worth ₹2.06 lakh crore, enhancing 1,500 km of port links. In port-led industrialisation, 14 projects worth ₹55,000 crore have been initiated, with 9 completed. Over 310 projects worth ₹26,000 crore in Coastal Community Development and Inland Waterways have improved infrastructure and benefitted 30,000+ fishermen. The Ministry has also allocated ₹10,000 crore for 119 projects across coastal states and UTs.
The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal said, “Sagarmala has been a game-changer in unlocking the true potential of India’s maritime sector. Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji, the huge value of maritime sector, that remained neglected for decades, was realised with Sagarmala. As we move towards Sagarmala 2.0, our focus is on bridging critical infrastructure gaps with fresh investments, driving coastal economic growth, and positioning India as a global maritime leader in line with the Hon’ble Prime Minister Modiji’s vision for a Viksit and Atmanirbhar Bharat by 2047.”
Sagarmala 2.0 will expand focus to shipbuilding, repair, breaking, and recycling, backed by ₹40,000 crore in budgetary support, aiming to attract ₹12 lakh crore in investments over the next decade.
The programme has accelerated port efficiency, inland waterways revival, and global trade competitiveness. Coastal shipping grew 118% in a decade, Ro-Pax ferries transported 40 lakh passengers, and inland waterway cargo surged 700%. Nine Indian ports rank in the world’s top 100, with Vizag in the top 20 container ports, marking India's rise as a global maritime leader.
