Govt clears Rs. 4,000-cr rail development projects
In order to boost rail related and development projects, the Union minister of State for Finance and Shipping Pon Radhakrishnan recently announced projects worth Rs 4,000 crore for the entire Kanniyakumari – Thiruvananthapuram region in the downstream southern areas of the country. To start with, the Union Minister of State of Railways Rajen Gohain laid the foundation stone for Rs 3,618 crore project involving doubling of rail track with electrification projects covering 349 kms in Kanniyakumari-Nagercoil Thiruvananthapuram stretch. Besides, he also laid the foundation stone for three infrastructural projects, Gohain inaugurated/dedicated Escalator facility, Wi-Fi services and 100% LED lighting facilities at Nagercoil Junction Railway station. He also revealed that the outlay for Tamil Nadu this fiscal year 2017-18 is Rs 2,287 crore, which is an increase of about 160% over the financial years from 2009-10 to 2016-17 and the increase in the outlay for passenger amenities from Rs 33 crore in the fiscal 2016-17 to Rs.38 crore in 2017-18.
