In order to expand the metro rail network across major cities in the state, the state government in UP has fast tracked building of metro services in cities like Kanpur, Agra, Meerut, Jhansi, Allahabad and Gorakhpur. A new metro rail project is also coming up to connect Greater Noida with the upcoming airport in Jewar. Meanwhile, the Agra Metro project, set for completion by 2024, will provide connectivity to the famous Taj Mahal and also enable tourists to travel easily to other tourist sites. A single SPV named as UP Metro Rail Corporation is being set up for the execution and operations of metro rail projects across these cities . At present, the metro rail services are available in Lucknow, Ghaziabad and between the twin cities of Noida and Greater Noida in Gautam Buddh Nagar adjoining Delhi. However, the Noida Metro Rail Corporation (NMRC), which operates the Noida Metro Aqua Line between Noida and Greater Noida, will continue to work as a separate entity, said official sources in the state government.
