Decks cleared for ₹4,829-cr metro project

Metro Project
The Airport-Barasat Metro project has recently secured approval from the Railway Board for the underground construction along a technically challenging 3.5km stretch and sanctioned an additional amount to take the project cost from Rs 3,207 crore to Rs 4829.57 crore. Once completed till New Barrackpore, the Metro link will provide faster access to Calcutta from the northern suburbs and would take about four years for the project to be completed.

The Airport-Barasat link is the only Metro project in the city for which even preliminary work not yet started. The airport authorities had raised objections to an elevated viaduct because of its proximity to the landing zone for aircraft. Once work starts and tracks are built till New Barrackpore, it will be easier to stretch it till Barasat. Underground construction entails cost escalation by two-and-a-half times. For each km of underground tracks, the estimated cost is Rs 500-600 crore pushing the construction cost of the project upward.
