CMRL has decided to build a 5th corridor for the proposed Coimbatore Metro project to connect Vellore and Ukkadam, said sources. Consulting firm Systra MVA has prepared the feasibility report. The 1st corridor will be 26-km long connecting Ukkadam with Kaniyur; the 2nd will connect Ukkadam and Bilichi areas; the 3rd between Thanneerpandal and Karanampettai will be of 24-42-km; the 4th will cover 44-km between Karunya Nagar-Ganeshapuram; and the 5th will be 11-km long connecting the bus terminal at Vellalore. It has also identified plots at the Press Colony and Chinniyapalam belonging to the station metro train for building facilities. The routes will be taken up without disturbing the traffic flow. Underground alignment of the routes and stations will be carried out by cut and cover methods. After securing financial sanctions for land acquisition, the revenue department will help CMRL to acquire the lands for building metro rail depots and allied facilities.
