The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has recently floated tenders for the appointment of design consultants for the construction of 116 metro stations under the 108 km Phase-II expansion program, said official sources, claiming that once the contract is awarded the selected consultant will design the stations‘ architecture and thereafter the locations of these stations will be decided. In this network, only 50 km length will be taken up for construction at first, which will cover Madhavaram to CMBT (15 km) and another one from Madhavaram to Sholinganallur (35 km) length. Of this, the stretch between Madhavaram and Shastri Nagar will be elevated and then goes underground till CMBT. The other stretch originating from Madhavaram will be underground till Taramani Link Road and then runs elevated up to Sholinganallur. The underground stretch might consume more time owing to the tunneling and other works involved; also, the cost of construction of underground stations is likely to be much more than that of elevated ones.
