As many as 20 private players in the infrastructure and transportation sector, such as Bombardier India, Adani Ports, France's Alstom, Spain's Talgo, Macquarie group, Tata Realty, among others, have evinced keen interest in operating private passenger trains in India. Bids for operating 150 private trains on 100 routes will open shortly. The Indian Railways has proposed to operate trains on 100 routes in the first phase of the plan to allow private companies into the passenger train segment, a first of its kind development. Niti Aayog has estimated an investment opportunity of ₹22,500 crore in the segment as the 2019-20 budget had pegged the national transporter's requirement of infrastructure investment at ₹50 lakh crore over 12 years, necessitating the involvement of private players in the sector. NIIF, Hyundai Rotem Company, CAF India, Hitachi India, Medha Servo, Thoth Infrastructure, CRRC ZELC, BEML, Siemens, IRCTC, Bharat Forge, Gatx, Gateway Rail Freight, KEC International, Essel Group and RK Associates were among the other players present at the stakeholders meet held recently.
