In a bid to allow signal-free vehicular traffic flow from Nizamuddin to New Friends Colony or Jamia University on Mathura road, the PWD has decided to build 750 meters long tunnel at the intersection at an investment worth Rs.87 crore. The department is currently waiting for financial approval from the central as well as the Delhi government. Under the project, the PWD will build a tunnel below the Ashram Chowk between Nizamuddin railway over bridge and CSIR apartment on Mathura road. Once commissioned, it would benefit commuters passing through the busy Ashram crossing which records approximately 4.29 lakh vehicles every day. For building the mega road project, 80% of the funds will come from the Centre while 20% will be borne by the Delhi government. Once the financial approval is given, the tendering process will begin and the project will be completed within 12 to 15 months, said official sources.
