Even as the first phase of the Vizag Metro Rail (VMR) is still in the pre-construction stage, the metro authorities have come up with a fresh proposal to extend it up to Bhogapuram International Airport. As per the project's first phase, which has been officially approved, the VMR will cover a distance of 42.54 km from Gajuwaka to Kommadi in Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) limits. According to the second phase proposal, which is yet to receive official nod, it will be extended to the Bhogapuram airport from Kommadi and to the Vizag Steel Plant from Gajuwaka. The newly added distance will be roughly 37 km, Amaravati Metro Rail Corporation Limited (AMRC) said, adding that to extend the Vizag Metro rail project to the Bhogapuram international airport is actively under consideration. The viabilities of the second phase depend on the progress of the Bhogapuram international airport project, sources added.
