The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is contemplating the expansion of proposed Chhatrapati Sambhaji Raje International airport at Purandar in Pune entailing an investment of Rs.650 crore, airport director Ajay Kumar said that the expansion will involve the construction of new terminal building, connecting roads, solar power system, new check in counters and boarding gates and added improvement of passenger amenities, among others. The Pune airport will also soon start transshipment facility for cargo as part of the expansion plan and that the new airport could become operational by 2022-23; till then the existing airport will have to be expanded. The airport has to increase the number of flight movements from 90 to 154. It is being a defence airport there is a restriction on flight movements out of Pune with time slots reserved for the IAF, airport director Ajay Kumar said there has been a drastic increase of passengers at the airport to 8.2 million in 2016-17. As a matter of fact 42,000 sqm terminal building has been cleared and work is all set to start any time this year.
