AAI
The Airports Authority of India has started the construction work on a new greenfield international airport at Hirasar near Rajkot in Gujarat involving an investment of ₹2,654 crore. The project is planned as a single runway airport for the operation of 'C' category aircraft. Hirasar is 36 km from Rajkot on NH-8-B connecting Ahmedabad and Rajkot. The city's existing airport, near Race Course, cannot be expanded due to space limitations. According to Rajkot Assistant Collector Parimal Pandya, the aviation agency has decided that the runway will be built over the river based on the Box Culvert Design. There is one check dam at the site, which has been removed and water diverted and remaining standing structures on the airport site will also be removed shortly. The project is expected to be commissioned by the end of 2022.
