Tamil Nadu government has readied DPR for the construction of an elevated road project between Chengalpattu and Tambaram and now NHAI is all set to float tenders. The estimated project cost for constructing the six-lane elevated corridor on the Grand Southern Trunk Road is around ₹35 billion and construction work is set to start in the next couple of months.

The Tambaram-Chengalpattu corridor will cross between Perungalathur and beyond the Paranur toll plaza. Once completed, it will add a carriageway to the busy stretch of traffic between the city and the southern parts of the state and to ensure smooth vehicular movement, ramps have been planned near the new bus stand coming up at Kilambakkam, by the side of Potheri railway station, Mahindra World City and at Guduvanchery.
