NHAI unveils six-lane elevated highway in Kolkata
To ease traffic congestion on the Kona Expressway, which is one of the three major highways to enter Kolkata, the National Highway Authority of India has announced the construction of a 7.2-km long six-lane elevated superhighway. The Kona Expressway, which is a part of NH 12 and connects NH 16 near Kona, Nibra to Vivekananda Setu leading to Kolkata, has been a hotbed of traffic snarls. The new elevated stretch, estimated to cost Rs 720 crore, is expected to be completed within 2026 and will provide a solution to the traffic menace.
With the new elevated road, vehicles entering and exiting the capital city can avoid getting stuck in traffic on the surface road below and save significant time. As per the DPR, the six-lane elevated viaduct will be constructed on a single row of piers located over major congestion points such as Santragachhi bus terminus, Santragachhi railway station, Shibpur, Canal Side Road, and Carrie Road junction. The Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) has been awarded the contract for the project and has to complete the elevated stretch within 30 months. Along with the 6-lane elevated stretch, NHAI will also be building a four-lane surface road, making the highway a 10-lane corridor.
