Nagpur Municipal Corporation Expands Road Concretisation Projects

The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC)
The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has announced plans to convert an additional 23.45 kilometers of major roads from asphalt to cement, signaling an expansion in its road concretisation initiatives. Among the 33 shortlisted tar roads, 17 fall within the South-West assembly constituency, represented by Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

According to NMC chief engineer Rajiv Gaikwad, tenders have been invited for the execution of these projects, estimated to cost ₹296.46 crore. With a population exceeding 40 lakh residents, the NMC asserts that this concretisation drive will effectively address the perennial pothole problem, particularly exacerbated during the monsoon season when the city receives the majority of its annual rainfall, leading to flooding.

Despite the higher initial cost, the civic body anticipates significantly reduced maintenance expenses for concrete roads compared to tar roads, where substantial funds are allocated annually for pothole repairs.

Under previous phases (I, II, and III), the NMC successfully converted 690 kilometers out of 1,556 kilometers of tar roads to cement. The selected roads for phase IV concretisation are major stretches ranging from 9 meters to 24 meters in width, divided into 14 packages. Notably, six of these packages are located in the Laxmi Nagar zone, falling within Fadnavis’ constituency, while eight roads in the Dharampeth zone have also been earmarked for the project.

Additionally, the NMC has approached the state government for ₹700 crore to implement two more cement road projects under phases V and VI, further demonstrating its commitment to enhancing the city's infrastructure.
