West Bengal Shifts Port Strategy with Rs 19,209 Cr Dadanpatrabar Deep-Sea Proposal

West-Bengal
The maritime landscape of Eastern India is undergoing a significant strategic realignment. Backed by a Rs 19,209 crore maritime transformation blueprint from the Central Government, the West Bengal state government has officially adjusted its long-term port expansion strategy. Authorities have chosen to set aside the long-discussed Tajpur port location, shifting their primary development focus to the Dadanpatrabar site.

The shift to Dadanpatrabar is driven primarily by asset availability and ease of execution. The new location offers approximately 1,700 acres of contiguous land that is already under public ownership. This eliminates the lengthy legal, financial, and socio-economic delays usually associated with large-scale land acquisition in the state.

The proposed deep-sea port will feature high-draft berths capable of hosting next-generation capesize and panamax cargo vessels. Civil works will also require extensive capital dredging to establish a reliable approach channel. The maritime hub will be integrated with dedicated freight corridors and highway networks, positioning Dadanpatrabar as a primary gateway for trade heading to landlocked northeastern states and neighboring international markets.
