182 Port Infrastructure Projects Worth Rs 1.09 Lakh Crore Identified Under PM Gati Shakti
Of these, 75 projects worth Rs 31,967 crore have been completed. The projects are being implemented by Major Ports, State Maritime Boards and Union Territories. Separately, 25 coastal shipping and inland water transport projects worth Rs 1,178.5 crore have been completed under the Sagarmala programme.
To strengthen last-mile port connectivity, the government has also identified 294 road and rail projects following an assessment under the Comprehensive Port Connectivity Plan. Of these, 84 projects — comprising 63 rail and 21 road projects — have been completed.
The government has simultaneously undertaken port capacity expansion, berth mechanisation and capital dredging to accommodate deep-draft vessels. These measures have increased the combined cargo handling capacity of Major Ports to 1,728 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) as of March 2026.
Green port initiatives are also being implemented, including the Green Tug Transition Programme, onshore power supply systems, electrification of port equipment, renewable energy installations and deployment of zero-emission vehicles under the Harit Sagar Green Port Guidelines.
Under the Sagarmala Scheme, 79 projects worth Rs 5,374.5 crore have been completed across coastal shipping and inland waterways, coastal community development, port modernisation and port connectivity. Another 54 projects worth Rs 4,538.2 crore are under implementation.
