142 Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals Operational, Attract Rs 10,000 Crore Private Investment
The ministry said the GCT policy, launched to encourage private investment in rail cargo infrastructure, has attracted around Rs. 10,000 crore in investments. The commissioned terminals handled 146 million tonnes of freight during FY2025-26, while in-principle approvals have been granted for another 310 terminals.
The terminals have been developed based on industry demand, freight potential, rail connectivity and logistics requirements. Odisha has the highest number of operational GCTs with 12 terminals, followed by Rajasthan (10), Andhra Pradesh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh (five each), and Karnataka (four). Additional approvals have also been issued for new terminals across these states.
The GCTs handle a wide range of commodities, including cement, steel, coal, foodgrains, fertilisers, minerals, containers, automobiles and agricultural produce. The ministry said the terminals have improved rail freight efficiency by reducing first- and last-mile logistics costs, speeding up loading and unloading operations, improving wagon turnaround and encouraging a modal shift from road to rail.
The policy also supports the development of integrated logistics infrastructure, including warehouses, silos and cold storage facilities, helping strengthen regional supply chains, improve connectivity for industries and farmers, and promote economic development.
