Govt approves ₹2,700-cr for rejuvenation of Ganga and tributaries

The Indian government has approved projects worth ₹2,700 crore for the rejuvenation of the Ganga River and its tributaries under the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG). Of the approved projects, 12 pertain to the development of sewerage infrastructure in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. In Uttar Pradesh, three projects were approved, including the development of sewerage infrastructure in Prayagraj at a cost of ₹475.19 crore. In Bihar, projects for Daudnagar and Motihari towns were approved at an estimated cost of ₹42.25 crore and ₹149.15 crore, respectively. In West Bengal, the rejuvenation of the Adi Ganga River was approved at a cost of ₹653.67 crore. In Jharkhand, a project that includes the construction of five sewage treatment plants with a collective capacity to treat 192 million liters of waste per day, as well as interception, diversion, and other works was approved at an estimated cost of ₹808.33 crore in Dhanbad town. This project aims to curb pollution of the Damodar River, an important tributary of the Ganga, by tapping all the drains that flow into it. All projects related to curbing pollution of the Damodar River in Jharkhand have been approved by the central government.
