India’s First Bullet Train to Start Between Surat & Vapi in August 2027, Full Mumbai–Ahmedabad Route by 2029

BulletTrain
India’s long-awaited bullet train project is set to debut its inaugural run in August 2027, covering the 100 km stretch between Surat and Vapi in Gujarat, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced. The service marks the first phase of the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) Corridor, a flagship infrastructure project that will eventually span 508 km between Sabarmati (Ahmedabad) and Mumbai.

Speaking after launching the rationalisation of bulk cement rates and the policy for bulk cement terminals at Rail Bhawan, Vaishnaw said, “A significant milestone is that the bullet train will cover the distance between Ahmedabad and Mumbai in just 1 hour 58 minutes once the high-speed corridor is fully operational.”

The trains will operate at speeds of up to 320 kmph, making them India’s fastest passenger service. The full route will feature 12 stations, and while express services with four stops will complete the journey in 1 hour 58 minutes, trains halting at all stations will take approximately 2 hours 17 minutes.

The entire 508 km corridor is expected to be completed by December 2029, connecting key cities including Sabarmati, Ahmedabad, Anand, Vadodara, Bharuch, Surat, Bilimora, Vapi, Boisar, Virar, Thane, and Mumbai.

The project is being executed with Japanese collaboration, incorporating cutting-edge Shinkansen technology, and represents a transformative step in India’s transport modernization, aimed at boosting connectivity, economic growth, and regional development along the western corridor.
