Indian Railways plans to double train originating capacity in 48 major cities by 2030: Ashwini Vaishnaw

The plan focuses on augmenting existing terminals with additional platforms, stabling lines, pit lines and shunting facilities, while also identifying and developing new terminals in and around urban areas. Maintenance infrastructure, including mega coaching complexes, will be expanded, along with upgrades in signalling, traffic facilities and multitracking to increase sectional capacity and handle higher train volumes.
To ensure balanced capacity growth, nearby stations will be developed alongside main terminals. For instance, capacity enhancement around Pune will include Hadapsar, Khadki and Alandi in addition to upgrades at Pune station. The strategy covers both suburban and non-suburban traffic, keeping in view the distinct operational needs of each segment.
A detailed plan covering 48 major cities is currently under consideration and will consolidate works that are planned, proposed or already sanctioned. Actions will be categorised into immediate, short-term and long-term measures, with defined timelines and outcomes. Zonal Railways have also been directed to enhance train handling capacity across divisions by addressing operational bottlenecks at stations, yards and sections.
Commenting on the initiative, Ashwini Vaishnaw said the Railways is expanding coaching terminals and enhancing sectional and operational capacities across cities to meet rising passenger demand, reduce congestion and significantly improve nationwide connectivity.
