Govt Pushes Bharatmala Pariyojana with 18,714 km Roads Completed
The Government of India approved the Bharatmala Pariyojana, targeting 34,800 km of road development with an estimated investment of ₹5.35 lakh crore. The program aims to enhance connectivity and reduce logistics costs through the construction of Economic Corridors, Inter-Corridors, Feeder Routes, National Corridor efficiency improvements, Border and International Connectivity, Coastal and Port Connectivity Roads, Expressways, and residual NHDP projects.
As of October 31, 2024, projects covering 26,425 km have been awarded, and 18,714 km have been constructed. IIM Bangalore is conducting a study on the socio-economic impact of the program, which is currently underway.
Challenges such as delays in pre-construction activities, financial issues faced by contractors, force majeure events, and material shortages have impacted project timelines. To address these issues, the government has implemented several measures, including:
- Expediting land acquisition processes.
- Revamping the Parivesh Portal for quicker forest and environmental clearances.
- Facilitating online approvals for General Arrangement Drawings (GAD) of ROBs/RUBs from Railways.
- Conducting review meetings with stakeholders, including State Governments.
These efforts aim to streamline execution and ensure timely completion of projects under the Bharatmala Pariyojana.
