German crane and transport company Kran Völkl GmbH & Co. KG has expanded its fleet with the addition of a second Liebherr LTM 1150-5.3 mobile crane as part of its ongoing fleet modernisation programme.

Based in Straubing, Lower Bavaria, the company had earlier acquired a Liebherr LTC 1050-3.1 and its first LTM 1150-5.3 around two years ago. The latest investment follows the strong operational and economic performance of the earlier crane.

The five-axle LTM 1150-5.3 is designed to operate with a 12-tonne axle load while carrying nine tonnes of counterweight on public roads, enabling many lifting operations without the need for an additional ballast transport vehicle. This enhances operational efficiency and reduces transport costs.

Kran Völkl said it typically renews its crane fleet every eight years to meet the evolving requirements of the construction and industrial sectors. The company cited the proven performance and reliability of the LTM 1150-5.3 as the key reasons for selecting the same model with identical specifications for its latest investment.

Extensive specification

The Liebherr 150-tonne cranes feature, amongst other things, a hydraulic double-folding jib, a second hoist with a mounting jib, a radio remote control, aluminium rims and a boom camera. Added to this is a comprehensive LED lighting package with ten work lights. “The capacity for accessories was particularly important to us. Despite nine tonnes of ballast, a second hoist and a three-roller hook block, there is still around 400 kilograms of headroom at the maximum gross weight of 60 tonnes. That’s why we opted for the alloy wheels,” says Daniel Völkl Fischl.

Völkl uses its LTM 1150-5.3 for construction site work, industrial applications, precast assembly and recovery operations. The company’s own crane fleet currently comprises 13 units, including a large number of Liebherr cranes. Völkl Fischl explains: “We have been a Liebherr customer for several years. As we are satisfied with the quality and service, we opted for Liebherr.”

The family-run business was founded in 1932 and today employs around 30 staff. Alongside a continuous fleet renewal programme, the company focuses on organic growth and technological development. “Over the last two years, we have purchased a total of four new cranes – three of them to replace existing ones, and one to expand our fleet,” says Völkl Fischl.
