Navigating the Challenges of C&D Waste Management in India
In recent years, there has been a remarkable surge in construction activity across India, driven by rapid urbanization, a growing population, and increasing economic aspirations. As the country continues to develop, infrastructure projects have become a cornerstone of this progress, encompassing everything from residential and commercial buildings to extensive transportation networks.
However, the construction boom has brought with it a pressing challenge: the management and proper utilisation of Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste. With every new project, a substantial amount of waste is generated, and as older structures are dismantled or renovated, the volume of waste continues to rise.
As per estimates, the construction industry in India generates about 150-500 million tonnes of C&D waste every year, accounting for 35%–40% of the global C&D waste. This is a major environmental concern for most Indian municipalities, especially given that India recycles only 1% of the C&D waste produced, according to estimates by the Center for Science and Environment. This issue in India is further complicated by poor waste management practices and a lack of comprehensive data, making the problem even more difficult to address.
The disposal of C&D waste often involves dumping in unauthorized locations, leading to environmental degradation and missed opportunities for resource recovery. This situation necessitates a sustainable approach involving three critical players: research and development institutions, regulatory bodies, and the industry. Each of these entities plays a vital role in addressing the challenges associated with C&D waste and harnessing its potential for recycling and reuse.
Key areas of focus include increasing public awareness about the responsible management of C&D waste, developing innovative reuse and recycling methods, and establishing a robust regulatory framework. By combining these efforts, we can hope to create a sustainable system that reduces the ecological footprint of construction activities and contributes to a circular economy.
Through this comprehensive report, industry experts shed light on the path forward for effective C&D waste management with proper utilisation and its critical role in India’s journey towards sustainable development.
