Govt to Bid Over ₹2 lakh cr Road Projects on BOT Model by March 2024
India's Transport Ministry plans to bid out more than ₹2 lakh crore worth of road and highway projects on the build-operate-transfer (BOT) model by March 2024. Minister Nitin Gadkari emphasizes the shift from the existing EPC model to encourage private players to construct higher-quality roads, with a commitment to maintaining them for 15 years. The government also aims to introduce advanced technologies, including GPS-based toll collection systems by March 2024, replacing traditional toll plazas. The move is expected to reduce traffic congestion and enable precise toll charges based on the actual distance traveled. Pilot projects for automatic number plate recognition systems have been conducted to facilitate automated toll collection without vehicle stops.
