The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited has reported significant progress on the 21-km underground tunnel of the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor, with around 5 km of excavation completed using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM).

The tunnel section between Bandra Kurla Complex and Shilphata includes a 5 km NATM stretch between Ghansoli and Shilphata, where excavation has been completed, enabling the next phase of construction.

Work has now progressed to the installation of key systems within the tunnel, including drainage infrastructure for water management, waterproofing membranes to prevent seepage, and reinforcement structures for stability. Final concrete lining is also being carried out using specialised lining gantries, while equipment rooms are being developed to support operations and maintenance.

Overall construction of the high-speed rail corridor has accelerated, with 343 km of viaduct and 434 km of pier work completed out of the total 508 km alignment. Multiple bridges and structural components have also been completed, along with installation of noise barriers, track beds and overhead equipment, marking steady progress on India’s first bullet train project.
