India Expands Carbon Capture Projects Across States with NTPC, IOCL, JSW and Others

Among operational projects, NTPC Limited has commissioned a 3,000 TPA CO₂-to-methanol plant at Vindhyachal in Madhya Pradesh. In Tamil Nadu, Tuticorin Alkali Chemicals and Fertilizers Limited operates a 60,000 TPA CO₂ capture facility, while JSW Steel runs a 500 TPD CO₂ capture system at its Salav plant in Maharashtra.
Several projects are currently under execution, particularly in Andhra Pradesh, where NTPC is developing CO₂-to-ethanol and sustainable aviation fuel projects. Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) is executing a 24 KTPA CCU unit at its Visakh refinery. In Telangana, NTPC is developing a carbonated fly ash brick plant, while collaborations involving Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, Thermax Limited and CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology are advancing pilot and demonstration technologies.
A wide range of CCU projects are also proposed across states including Assam, Gujarat, Odisha, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu. Key players such as Oil India Limited, Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited and ONGC are exploring applications such as enhanced oil recovery, CO₂-to-chemicals conversion and mineralisation technologies.
Academic and research institutions including IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur and IIT Madras are partnering with industry to develop innovative carbon capture solutions integrated with cement and energy sectors.
The growing pipeline of CCU projects highlights India’s increasing focus on reducing industrial emissions, promoting sustainable technologies and building a low-carbon economy.
