India Identifies 223 Ageing Thermal Power Units for Renovation and Life Extension
The roadmap is based on the R&M Guidelines 2023, prepared by a committee constituted by the Government in March 2022 comprising representatives from NTPC, CEA, Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Ltd. (GSECL) and BHEL. The committee evaluated the technical and operational aspects of extending the life of ageing thermal power plants.
The identified units, all over 20 years old as of December 2022, will undergo R&M and life extension in nine phases between January 2024 and June 2046 to ensure that capacity upgrades do not disrupt the country's power supply.
Of the 223 units, 81 units (26,040 MW) belong to the central sector, 116 units (28,870 MW) to the state sector, and 26 units (8,530 MW) to the private sector.
The Ministry clarified that the Central Government does not provide financial assistance or operate any dedicated scheme for the modernisation of thermal power plants. Instead, generating companies are expected to finance R&M and life extension works after assessing their commercial viability.
