India Must Build Clean Energy Manufacturing Ecosystem to Strengthen Energy Security: H.D. Kumaraswamy

The Minister said India's strategy under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative is to become a global manufacturing hub for clean energy technologies by strengthening domestic capabilities in steel, batteries, power equipment, electric mobility, construction equipment and advanced industrial technologies, while remaining integrated with global supply chains.
He noted that recent geopolitical developments, supply chain disruptions and competition for critical minerals have made resilient manufacturing and technological capability central to national energy security. "India must become one of the world's leading producers of the equipment, materials and technologies that will drive the global energy transition," he said.
Highlighting the role of the steel sector, Kumaraswamy said India, the world's second-largest steel producer, aims to achieve 300 million tonnes of steelmaking capacity by 2030, with a strong focus on green steel, renewable energy adoption, energy-efficient technologies and decarbonisation.
The Minister also highlighted key government initiatives supporting domestic manufacturing, including the PM E-DRIVE Scheme with an outlay of Rs. 10,900 crore to strengthen India's electric mobility ecosystem, the PLI Scheme for Advanced Chemistry Cell Batteries worth Rs. 18,100 crore to establish 50 GWh of domestic battery manufacturing capacity, and the Rs. 7,280 crore Scheme for Promotion of Manufacturing of Sintered Rare Earth Permanent Magnets to reduce import dependence in strategic sectors.
Calling for greater collaboration between government, industry, academia and research institutions, Kumaraswamy said resilient supply chains require complete domestic manufacturing ecosystems that generate value, create jobs and support India's vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047.
