Completes 13 Deck Slabs in 46 days

Ashoka Buildcon Sets Another Milestone at Bundelkhand Expressway

The Bundelkhand site team achieved yet another feat on 15 Jan 2022 by completing 13 deck slabs of varying types in just 46 days. Therefore, it is a demonstration of exemplary display of overall project executing capabilities of the organization, similar to continuous laying of Dense Bituminous Macadam (DBM) and Bituminous Concrete (BC) layers executed in recent past at this project only.

The site has decked 12,000 sqm for various structures which were in different stages of works on 1st December, before embarking on decking works (listed Table 1):

Sl. No Structure type Deck Area Status as on Dec 1st 2021 Slab Completion Date
1 Major Bridge at 138 (3 Spans ) 100.15*17.5*2 = 3505 sqm Girder in two spans (10 Nos) yet to be launched on RHS Diaphragms were in progress in LHS slab LHS : 15th Dec 2021 RHS : 11th Jan 2022
2 Flyover @ 141 (2 spans) 60*17.5 *2 = 2100 sqm Only 5 girders launched out of 20. LHS : 24th Dec 2021 RHS : 15th Jan 2022
3 Minor Bridge @ 119 (2 spans) 50.69*17.5*2 = 1775 sqm Girders launched with completion of Diaphragms.  Reinforcement nearing completion for RHS RHS : 1st Dec 2021 LHS : 27th Dec 2021
4 Minor Bridge @ 120 (single span) 39.8*17.5*2 = 1393 sqm Girders launched without diaphragm construction RHS : 12th  Dec 2021 LHS : 4th Jan 2022
5 5 cell Minor Bridge @126 57.46*17.5*2 = 2011 sqm Reinforcement near completion for LHS. Six lifts wall to be taken up for RHS. LHS : 1st Dec 2021 RHS: 18th Dec 2021
6 4 cell Minor Bridge cum LVUP @ 136 MNB : 45.80 *17.5*1 = 802 sqm
LVUP : 11.82*17.5 *2 = 414 sqm
Reinforcement for MNB in progress. VUP Raft completed for both carriageways. MNB RHS : 17th Dec 2021 LVUP LHS : 29th Dec 2021 LVUP RHS : 4th Jan 2022
  Total Deck Area 12000 sqm
Equivalent 3-lane bridge deck construction of 1.142 km in 46 days
Quantum of work for the above structures:
  • Concrete : 5617 cum
  • Reinforcement steel : 1091 tons
The Structures team at site has simultaneously launched the balance 25 girders in just 6 days, handling almost 1705 tons to facilitate completion of the slab work at the Major Bridge and Flyover.

Ashoka Buildcon Sets Another Milestone at Bundelkhand Expressway

Other key factors considered towards mobilization of formwork materials to match the speed, de-shuttering from one side and re-using at second side, shifting of materials from one location to another, staging activities in box structures, and completion of wall in a few structures, to ensure deck slab concreting in record time.

Approximately 460 labourers were on the task to achieve this intended outcome. Innovative strategies included usage of profile deck-sheeting, small brackets between girders to fix reveal pins, plyboard shutters for diaphragm works for easy handling, deploying separate gangs for each span to work parallelly etc. to ensure that the project meets client’s requirement of opening both sides of the carriageway before March 2022.

The mission was targeted for completion in maximum 35 days but the rains that lasted for almost six days and the extreme cold in the last week of December led to some breaks in the work.

In doing so, Ashoka Buildcon Limited has put its place in the map of Bundelkhand Expressway Project for completing all the slabs of Main Carriageway ahead of other packages of the projects, and this led to Customer Delight experience for all stakeholders including UPEIDA.

This challenging mission was possible due to support of UPEIDA, ICT and RITES.
