GICMAR Enriching the Construction Industry by Nurturing Talent
Though India has produced many construction experts, who have made the country proud with their landmark achievements, there's still an undeniable dearth of academically trained human capital in this sector, especially when we talk about the younger generation. Time and again, the Construction Industry's stalwarts have rued due to the lack of structured academic curriculums at the undergraduate levels, and also inadequate summer training options for budding construction professionals.
Taking the lead in brushing these talents aside is the Delhi-based Global Institute of Construction Management & Research (GICMAR), which was started by MDs/CEOs of various construction industry/construction equipment company leaders to educate, train and upgrade the skill of the construction managers/workers and then recruit them in their companies. GICMAR is really contributing to the cause. Being a unit of the Shanti Education Trust, it nurtures young talent through distance learning and regular programmes for high end value skill addition for the future construction managers (FCM). Notably, GICMAR offers specially made training modules and courses, designed and taught by industry stalwarts with live case studies to broaden the horizon of engineers and FCM.
Well, this global institute has now launched Graduate & Post Graduate Courses in Construction & Infrastructure Management. The educational body has also launched regular industrial training/skill development programmes for 8 weeks, 6 months & 1 year courses especially for young engineers.
In fact, the exposure to the Construction Industry through summer training has been of the most notable contributions of GICMAR. Till now the trend was rather discouraging as students had to really strive hard to approach the industry for summer training, and the industry too had exhibited a lack of interest in the same. Meanwhile, for students with some personal links in the industry, this task was not that difficult. Those left with no other option used to obtain certificates from Government/ PSU Undertakings without actually undergoing a proper training. And some students were hesitant in seeking internship at outstations. As a result of all these factors, the basic idea of summer internship as desired by the AICTE remained unfulfilled.
But GICMAR has reversed these trends by offering summer internship modules wherein students are taught by the industry professionals who impart education through live case studies. This helps the FCM in facing interviews. GICMAR certified FCM secure high paying jobs and are able to cement their position in the industry.
According to Mr. S.K. Grover, President GICMAR, and B.E. (CIVIL), F.I.E, C.E. (INDIA), Life member Indian concrete Institute and Member American concrete Institute, "We don't teach what is already covered in colleges' curriculum but by adding skills what is required by the construction and infrastructure industry from fresh engineers. We also undertake training of trainers and academia/ industry meets."
"We must share our knowledge/wisdom gained over many years' experiences with F.C.M. It really gives immense happiness and feeling of contribution by giving back to the construction industry," says Brig K.P. Singh, Retired Add. Director General of Border Roads.
Delighted with this type of initiative, Mr. Pravin Rao, V.P. Sunil HITEC, Nagpur, expresses, "Course – contents & concepts are excellent. Teaching by the industry, experts and values imparted are the need of the hour for FCM."
