Raise the Roof!
Pramod V. Patil, Product Manager – Waterproofing Systems & Sealants, construction chemical division, BASF India Ltd, Mumbai
A building's roof is one of its most important components and a defective roofing can affect not only a structure's maintenance but also have far reaching implications in terms of buildings life cycle cost. A durable waterproofing system that is resistant to changes in temperature and environmental factors will offer lasting protection, increase your building's value and reduce maintenance costs.
To protect roofs or decks with complex built-ups, the waterproofing system needs to be versatile and suitable for application to all major roof or deck types and designs. By using advanced polyurethane technology, we create impervious, monolithic membranes to withstand hydrostatic pressure with high elastic properties, good tensile strength and should give a seamless protection, be it an exposed roof or deck with intense built-ups or landscapes.
The sprayed roof coatings applied to vertical surfaces should not run, thus enabling easy application to complicated details. Unlike sheet membranes, these advanced polyurethane systems are monolithic with no weak spots caused by laps, welds or seams and are able to adhere to any substrate.
The high performance spray applied membranes are applied using custom designed advanced spray equipment thus ensuring a consistently high quality membrane production. The fast setting property enables quick application and up to 1000 m2 can be applied in a single day!
Coniroof
Coniroof, a versatile system for flat and pitched roof, is suitable for application to all major roof types and designs. These advance polyurethane waterproofing systems are multi-layered and comprise substrate sealers, primers, waterproofing membranes and protective top coats.
This advance spray technology conforms to all irregular surfaces without laps, welds, or seams forming a seamless membrane with no weak points for water ingress.
The new spray technology of Coniroof has also evolved and revolutionized the installation of traditionally hand applied liquid applied roofing membranes. The Coniroof spray applied membranes set in just a few seconds after application to form a solid, impervious, monolithic membrane. This makes detailing work using Coniroof up to 20 times faster than traditional sheeted methods as the system is applied at the same time as the main deck waterproofing membrane.
This robust and seamless watertight system has been designed for installation on most substrates, including old concrete, built-up felt, asphalt, single ply sheet membranes, metal and timber substrates etc.
Suitable for:
- New Built roofs / decks
- Refurbishment situation of old Roofs / Decks Refurbishment
- Failed Single Ply sheet Membranes
- Metal decks
- Over Nature Stone
- For Green roofs
- Insulated Roofs
Zeche Zollverein in Germany, a World Heritage site by UNESCO. The roof consists of trapezoidal sheet sections with additional armoured aquapanel boards, in some cases installed almost vertically. The objective was to waterproof the roof without any visible seams or joints. It was decided to use a system that would reliably meet all these requirements on a long-term basis, done with Coniroof roof waterproofing system.
Vivocity Shopping Mall in Singapore, this new built structure having wave shape iconic design based on a "surfing" theme. The concrete roof has been waterproofed with Coniroof system with white finish giving heat reflectance. Selected over the conventional acrylic or single ply preform membrane waterproof system due to speed and ease of installation as well as seamless and robust and gave a finish with aesthetic appeal.
Refectory of the College, institute building. This old refectory building no longer was able to fulfill the needs of the institutions. Something newer had to be put up: larger, brighter and more modern. What emerged was a refectory almost without compare. The Coniroof system made it possible to encapsulate the complex building geometry seamlessly.
Ravensburger AG is a company that offers high-quality products and services. For the refurbishment of the flat roof at its company Headquarters in Ravensburg, Germany, the company insisted on high-grade products and workmanship. The roof was covered by a slate-coated bitumen membrane which had repeatedly developed leaks despite several repair attempts. The large number of openings in the roof, for example skylights, ventilation outlets, etc., posed a special challenge. That's was why it was decided to use a system which could seal buildings without any additional joints or pre-formed components and could be sprayed directly onto the bitumen membranes. The system selected was the Coniroof advanced polyurethane roof waterproofing system.
The Rundsporthalle (round gymnasium) in Waiblingen was built about 30 years ago. The indoor sports complex has a roof made of 4 mm prestressed steel plate. A coating of about 3.5 cm of sprayed polyurethane foam was applied to the outer surface of the steel roof. This exposed thermal insulation layer was severely damaged in the following years as a result of inadequate UV protection. Originally, it was planned to use mineral fibre boards to replace the layer of sprayed foam which had been destroyed. However, as the new insulation would have been too heavy (19–20 kg/m2) to be supported by the steel roof, another, lighter solution was needed. BASF Coniroof a polyurethane based EOTA-approved and Green Certified membrane system sprayed onto polyurethane foam.
Whatever the nature of the structure, protection against the elements is the key to retaining its integrity. A committed working approach is required between solution provider and the client, to partner in providing a single source of expertise, and vast range of system that allows to add value through tailor-made solutions, which we offer with Coniroof systems.
Waterproofing systems from BASF have a multitude of general engineering applications. In sports stadiums, they can be used to protect stands and terraces against erosion and abrasion. For underground constructions, they also provide permanent protection against ground and surface water and harmful substances both liquid and gaseous and prevent root penetration. From cut and cover tunneling to secondary contain- ments and water structures, BASF has the answer.
