Rail Accidents Down 88% Since 2014-15 as Safety Spending, Kavach Deployment Gather Pace
The ministry attributed the improvement to higher investment in safety infrastructure, technological upgrades and the rollout of indigenous safety systems. Expenditure on railway safety has increased from Rs. 39,200 crore in 2013-14 to Rs. 1.20 lakh crore in the 2026-27 Budget. During 2026-27 (up to June 2026), only two consequential train accidents were reported.
Indian Railways has strengthened safety through electronic interlocking at 6,671 stations, interlocking of over 10,395 level crossing gates, complete track circuiting, extensive track renewal, replacement of conventional coaches with LHB coaches, elimination of all unmanned broad gauge level crossings and deployment of advanced track monitoring technologies.
The ministry said Kavach, India's indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system, has now been commissioned on 2,490 route km across sections of the Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah corridors. Trackside deployment is underway on 21,937 route km, while Kavach equipment has been installed on 6,045 locomotives. The government has also taken up installation in another 7,435 locomotives and 1,200 EMU/MEMU rakes.
According to the ministry, Rs. 3,874.9 crore has been spent on Kavach up to June 2026, with Rs. 2,066.24 crore allocated for 2026-27. More than 94,000 railway personnel, including around 57,000 loco pilots and assistant loco pilots, have been trained on the system as part of its large-scale deployment across the Indian Railways network.
