Electrification works are gathering momentum on the 508-km Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor as civil construction and track laying progress across the project.

The bullet train corridor is being equipped with India's first 2×25 kV overhead traction system, an advanced electrification technology used on high-speed rail networks globally. Designed to support train operations at speeds of up to 320 kmph, the system will provide a stable and uninterrupted power supply through 14 traction substations and 31 switching posts located across Maharashtra and Gujarat.

The project will feature an overhead catenary network supported by nearly 22,000 steel masts and over 25,700 cantilever assemblies across 1,125 track kilometres, including depots. The system has been engineered to ensure continuous power collection at high speeds while maintaining operational reliability.

The National High Speed Rail Corporation Ltd. (NHSRCL) said the project has achieved significant localisation, with key components such as transformers, overhead equipment, cross arms and traction power system equipment being manufactured in India under the 'Make in India' initiative. The indigenisation is expected to strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities and reduce dependence on imports for future high-speed rail projects.

To enhance operational safety, the corridor will be equipped with 28 earthquake detection seismometers linked to traction substations and switching posts, enabling automatic train stoppage in the event of seismic activity. The entire electrical network will also be monitored through a centralised control system to ensure safe and reliable high-speed operations.
