Indian Railways Inaugurates Kailaras-Birpur Rail Line, Extends Gwalior Train to Birpur

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav virtually inaugurated the rail section and flagged off the extended train service.
The extension will provide direct rail connectivity between Birpur, Vijaypur, Sabalgarh and Gwalior, improving access to education, healthcare, employment and boosting local trade and economic activity. The project is expected to benefit residents of more than 100 villages across Morena and Sheopur districts.
Vaishnaw said the gauge conversion is part of the 117-km Birlanagar-Birpur railway project, with the remaining sections from Birpur to Seroni Road (37 km) and Seroni Road to Sheopur Kalan (33 km) nearing completion. He said the entire Gwalior-Sheopur Kalan rail line is expected to be operational within the next few months and will eventually connect to Kota, strengthening links with major educational and industrial centres.
Highlighting railway investments in Madhya Pradesh, Vaishnaw said the state's railway budget has increased from Rs 632 crore during 2009-14 to Rs 15,188 crore in 2026-27. Railway projects worth around Rs 1.55 lakh crore are currently under implementation, while 80 stations are being redeveloped. The state is also served by five Vande Bharat trains and seven Amrit Bharat trains.
Scindia said the rail extension marks a major milestone for the Gwalior-Chambal region, while Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said improved connectivity would support industrial growth, tourism and emerging sectors such as battery energy storage, hydrogen manufacturing and footwear. He added that ongoing railway line doubling, tripling and quadrupling projects will further strengthen connectivity across Madhya Pradesh.
