KAVACH 4.0 incorporates technological improvements based on operational experience gained from deploying KAVACH Version 3.2 over 1,465 route km on South Central Railway. The latest version is designed to improve train safety, system reliability and operational performance and is planned for wider deployment across Indian Railways.
The upgraded system provides increased location accuracy for more precise train positioning and improved signal aspect information in larger railway yards. It also enables station-to-station communication through Optical Fibre Cable (OFC) and provides a direct interface with existing Electronic Interlocking Systems, improving integration with railway signalling infrastructure.
KAVACH is an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection system designed to assist locomotive pilots in maintaining prescribed speed limits and automatically apply brakes when required. It is designed to help prevent Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD), control train speeds in critical situations and reduce the risk of collisions.
The system is certified to Safety Integrity Level-4 (SIL-4), the highest level of safety integrity certification for such systems.
Deployment of KAVACH requires a combination of trackside and onboard infrastructure, including Station KAVACH at stations and block sections, RFID tags along the track, telecommunication towers, Optical Fibre Cable and Loco KAVACH equipment on locomotives.
The commissioning of KAVACH 4.0 on the Malkajgiri-Kamareddi section marks the first deployment of the upgraded version on Indian Railways and provides a basis for its further rollout across the network.
