MoPSW Approves Rs 335 Crore Flyover at Visakhapatnam Port to Boost Cargo Movement
The project, approved by Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, was appraised by the Delegated Investment Board (DIB) chaired by the Ministry's Secretary.
The proposed 3.584-km elevated corridor will connect Convent Junction with the Dock Area, separating road and rail traffic within the port. The flyover is designed to eliminate delays caused by nine major railway level crossings, which currently experience around 18 gate closures daily due to heavy train movements.
The project is expected to significantly reduce vehicle waiting times, ease congestion, lower fuel consumption and operating costs, and enable faster and more efficient cargo evacuation. In addition to the elevated corridor, the scope of work includes associated civil and electrical works, utility shifting, safety installations and five years of maintenance. Construction will be carried out with minimal disruption to ongoing port operations.
Commenting on the approval, Sarbananda Sonowal said the project would remove a critical bottleneck at Visakhapatnam Port, enabling faster cargo movement and improving overall operational efficiency. He added that the government remains committed to developing modern, seamless and globally competitive port infrastructure.
The minister also said the project aligns with the Government's vision of transforming India's maritime sector through modern infrastructure, technological advancement and greater investment, supporting the goals of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat 2047.
Aligned with the PM GatiShakti framework, the investment is expected to strengthen last-mile connectivity within the port and reinforce Visakhapatnam Port's role as a key hub in India's maritime logistics and trade network.
The project is scheduled for completion within 30 months.
