India’s peak power demand rose sharply to 255.8 GW amid severe heatwave conditions, according to the Ministry of Power, marking a significant jump from 237 GW recorded a day earlier.

The surge reflects increased electricity consumption driven by rising temperatures across regions. The government has projected a peak demand of 271 GW for 2026, with April demand estimated at around 263 GW.

In Delhi, peak power demand crossed the 7,000 MW mark for the first time in April, reaching 7,078 MW, compared to May in previous years. Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited also recorded its highest demand of the season at 2,030 MW, successfully meeting the load.
