expressway
The Central government has given in-principle approval for an elevated expressway linking Delhi with Dehradun and shrinking distance between the two cities from 250 km to 180 km. NHAI chairman S S Sandhu informed that on completion of the elevated road, the distance can be covered in two and a half hours from the current five-six hours. While the existing road between the two cities passes through Meerut, Muzaffarnagar and Roorkee, the new road will touch Baghpat and Saharanpur. The three phased e-way entails an investment of ₹8,080 crore. Terming the project as a major initiative for boosting connectivity to the Himalayan state, Uttarakhand CM said that the elevated road will give a major fillip to tourism and to the state's economic development. The first phase of the road will be of 31.2 km, connecting Akshardham in Delhi and the eastern peripheral expressway, which will include an 18km stretch of elevated road costing ₹3,250 crore. The second phase, the biggest among all, will connect the eastern peripheral expressway and Saharanpur and the 118-km stretch will be constructed at a cost of ₹4,830 crore. The last phase of 20.7 km will connect Ganeshpur to Dehradun and include the construction of a 1.8km-long tunnel and an additional tunnel of 400-m near Dehradun's Daat Kali temple, and an elevated road of 6.8km.
