Balkrishna Industries - Rajiv Poddar, Joint Managing Director

As believers in the ‘Precautionary Principle’, we consider it our responsibility to conserve environmental resources for sustainable development and have it implemented from our business model to product design and operations.

Decarbonization initiatives

We have undertaken various initiatives for energy conservation, emissions control, water efficiency, waste management, and materials management. To harness green energy and manage emissions, we have installed wind farms and solar plants at our manufacturing facilities, which generate clean energy and reduce our reliance on non-renewable energy sources. We have created several projects - including our Green Belt - at the plants which further help in reducing emissions.

Other initiatives include use of variable frequency drives, LED lighting, and energy-efficient pumps, to name a few. By implementing energy management systems and adopting energy-efficient technologies, we aim to minimize energy consumption in our manufacturing processes. We believe that by optimizing our energy usage we reduce our carbon emissions and contribute to a more sustainable manufacturing process.

Waste management
We approach waste management as a responsibility towards the environment. We follow a simple rule that no waste should leave our premises, thereby minimizing waste generation and ensuring responsible waste disposal. As a manufacturer, we are particularly sensitive to the issue of waste generation - not only during production but also during the packaging and transport stages. We are proud to have achieved 14.9% waste reduction in the last three years. All in all, we have a zero-landfill status at all our plants, and we recycle all generated waste - except for hazardous waste, which is disposed of according to the safety norms. Our 10-year goals are to achieve 20% waste reduction and 8-10% reduction of resources.

Sustainable technologies and materials
BKT is actively investing in research and development to explore sustainable technologies and materials. We are exploring alternatives to conventional materials, such as the development of tyres using natural, chemical-free components like dandelion, nano-cellulose, and graphene. These innovative materials have the potential to reduce our environmental impact and contribute to more sustainable tyre manufacturing. We continuously monitor and measure our steps toward sustainable practices to ensure we contribute to India’s clean energy transition.

Sustainable procurement of raw materials is a key aspect of our operations. BKT ensures that the raw materials used in tyre manufacturing comply with sustainability standards. By providing construction equipment manufacturers with tyres that meet sustainable procurement criteria, we contribute to the industry’s de-carbonization efforts. Our tyres are designed to optimize fuel efficiency and reduce carbon emissions, supporting the transition to greener construction practices.

Social and environmental responsibility

We make a constant effort to incorporate social and environmental concerns while developing products by removing SVHC (substance of very high concern) from the compound used in manufacturing tyres. In fact, all products manufactured are designed to protect the environment.

BKT, indeed, is the first tyre company, in India, to adhere to REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals) compliance environmental requirements of the European Union, and has obtained the REACH SVHC (substance of very high concern) compliance certificate for all the products manufactured.

Moreover, our tyres are manufactured in facilities that adhere to ISO 9001:2015 for quality management, ISO 14001:2015 for environmental management, and ISO 45001 for health, hygiene, and safety. These certifications reflect our dedication to maintaining high standards across our manufacturing processes.

At BKT, since we consider it our responsibility to conserve water, we rely on rainwater harvesting systems to reduce our groundwater consumption. Furthermore, our largest plant in Bhuj is a zero liquid discharge plant, which means no water is discharged from the premises. I’m happy to share that year-on-year, our water consumption was further reduced by 3.47% and we aim to continue this steady reduction. In fact, in the next 5 years, we will aim for all our plants to be ZLD (Zero Liquid Discharge).
