Ferrocement Water Tanks: A Cost-Effective & Durable Solution for India
Introduction
Ferrocement consists of a cement-rich mortar reinforced with wire mesh layers. For additional strength, plain wire reinforcement may also be incorporated. Unlike traditional reinforced concrete construction (RCC), which utilizes discrete reinforcement bars, ferrocement employs cement mortar instead of concrete, with uniformly distributed small diameter wire meshes across its thin cross-section. The thickness of ferrocement can range from 10 mm to 50 mm and consists of cement-sand mortar, thereby obviating the need for coarse aggregates. Unlike masonry construction, which cannot be molded into precise architectural shapes, ferrocement offers this capability.
