Centre Approves Rs 1,880 Crore NH-66 Four-Laning Project in South Goa

The project will include bypasses at Cuncolim and Balli to reduce the impact on residential areas where locals had raised concerns over possible displacement due to highway widening.
The approved highway expansion also includes a 5.78-km six-lane elevated corridor and a major six-lane railway overbridge. The stretch forms part of the larger Mumbai-to-Kanyakumari four-lane national highway corridor.
Earlier, the Centre had already sanctioned the widening of NH-66 from the Margao bypass to Cuncolim and from Bendordem to the Canacona bypass. The Cuncolim-Bendoredem section was the final remaining segment awaiting approval and funding.
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari for approving the project. He said the expansion will help decongest towns, improve daily commuting and support economic growth in South Goa.
Meanwhile, work on the four-laning of the 22-km Bendoredem-to-Canacona bypass section of NH-66 is also set to begin. The Centre has sanctioned Rs 952 crore for the project, and the contract was awarded earlier this year.
