Construction begins for Rs 521-cr railway manufacturing facility in Telangana

Rail Vikas Nigam (RVNL) has commenced construction on India's second railway manufacturing facility, located in Kazipet, Telangana. With an estimated cost of Rs 521 crore, this state-of-the-art facility will be dedicated to the production of various types of rolling stock. In its inaugural year, the facility aims to manufacture 1,200 wagons, with plans to scale up to 2,400 wagons in the following year.

Spanning over 160 acres, the upcoming manufacturing unit is being developed by RVNL and is scheduled to be completed by February 2025. The establishment of this facility is a crucial step towards achieving the target of scaling freight transportation to 3,000 million tonnes in India.

Designed to be an environmentally friendly structure, the new unit will incorporate sustainable features such as a solar power plant and rainwater harvesting infrastructure. It will also employ advanced technologies, including robotic painting of wagons and computerized machinery for precision cutting.

On July 8, 2023, the foundation stone for the manufacturing unit was laid by the Prime Minister, further underscoring the significance of this project. Initially approved as a wagon repair workshop, the facility was later converted into a wagon manufacturing unit to meet the growing demand for wagons and address pressure from various stakeholders.
